Everybody Has Love Affair in Bali ("Eat Pray Love" Movie Commentary)

Have you watch "Eat Pray Love" the movie directed by Ryan Murphy? If you haven't, I recommend you to watch it. It's not about good movie, although it's good one. But it's beyond entertainment, it's more than just a good story, or anything else. To me, the movie it's about people. It's about human spiritual and custom. It's about human interaction. And of course it's about four countries that involved within the story: Italy, India, Indonesia, and America. From each country in the movie, we can learn so much about life.
Three words in title "Eat Pray Love" respectively corresponding to the first three countries mentioned above. Eat for Italy, Pray for India, and Love for Indonesia. For America, it was represented by the main character Liz Gilbert (played by Julia Roberts) who did the three activities within the three countries.

Liz Gilbert is a typical New Yorker who spend all her time thinking about career and social life (I can say typical because many movies I've seen depict NYC and its people like that). In one day, she realize that some part of her life went wrong. Something seems missing. Although she got a good career and a good husband, somehow its not there. At that moment in the story, she reminded by an old man named Ketut from Bali who said that she got to consult her problems to God. To Liz, Ketus's suggestion was a new thing she never done before. So there's one scene where she introduce herself to God before consultation.

Anyhow, life goes on. After she got divorced from her reluctant husband, and plunged into a small Affairs with an actor, she decided to go for a journey on her own just to find whatsoever she looking for. Then the story begin.

Italy is Warm Like its Kitchen

Personally, from the entire part of the movie, Italy is the most fun! In the movie we can see that Liz were having so much fun with her new Italian friends and with lots and lots of Italian food! Italy part to me is like watching Discovery Travel and Living with stories. It's so much fun and interesting! Besides "brag" about culinary pleasure, we also learn how Italians interact with others. They're warm people who are not afraid to love and unveil their emotion. For me, the movie successfully brings out the pleasure of Italy.

Watched Liz interacting with Italian local also gave us the contrast between typical Italian and NYC. Not intend to generalized, but here I can say Italian is the "antidote" of NY-ers. New Yorkers should learn the essence of living from Italian. One supporting character at a barber shop told Liz that Americans are too tired and forget to enjoy life. There, she got some cool lesson about life from Italy: do not forget to think about yourself, enjoy life, find the pleasure of doing nothing, and love each other. Very nice.

India Makes You Believe
The part India is very different from Italy. It's the part where Liz is trying to find God and explore the Godness within. She went to ashram to meditate in order to find peaceful. There she also finds a man from Texas who eventually also came to ashram to find his way to forgive himself for his past wrongdoing. In some way, they found themselves in commons. They have the same purpose to came there, and as someone initially came there, the guy from Texas share his knowledge and what he has been through to find peace. To find God.

From India part, audiences will get spiritual advice. Not only vertical relation between human and God, but also horizontal relationship between humans. There's a part where Liz's Indian friend is married to someone that chosen by her parents. At that moment, the girl seems so afraid and cannot believe that she's going to married with she doesn't know. In that situation, Liz, who finally got her peaceful, gave motivation and spirit to the girl. Liz told her to believe in her marriage, everything is going to be just fine. That's divine. From India, Liz fine a remarkable conclusion that God is within us. You don't have to search God. It lies within you ourselves. Great silver lining.

Everybody Has Love Affair in Bali
As an Indonesian, its a pleasure to watch Indonesia part, specifically Bali. Before I watched the movie, I'm kinda curios how the movie frame Bali as a province. Personally I'm glad that Bali part is the love part of the movie. Bali, city of love, that's not bad. Although the movie condemn Durian fruit for its taste (which is entirely wrong, subjectively), overall, I am proud. Bali is one of cities in Indonesia that is well known for its warm people, exotic landscape, and beautiful custom. In the movie, Ketut character is a good representation of Balinese welcoming and warm trait. Always happy, patient, calm, and caring. Here Ketut play as the key role who guide Liz to her journey completion of seeking balance between the world and soul serenity.

In Bali, Liz meet Brazilian men (Felipe) who meant to be her loved one. Although Felipe almost kill Liz with his car, Felipe sportingly try to apologize and find a way to make thing better between the two them. And as we all know, on eventually Liz found him as a sweet sensitive father who is not afraid to show his feeling. Subsequently, in no time they fall in love.

Shortly, in Bali part of the movie, audiences will see the astounding Bali landscape and charming environment. Comfortable natural cottage and beautiful traditional custom. The movie framed Bali beautifully. To me the movie is a prove of world admiration towards Bali. Once again I am proud. Just like Liz who find her love in Bali, I believe that people will fall in love with Bali. Just remember what Ketut said, "always smile in the face, and always smile in liver (he means heart)", if you cannot do it, come to Bali and find Ketut.
